Prof. Min-Yuan Cheng

Cloud-Based Construction Information Management and Decision Support System

Professor Min-Yuan Cheng, a distinguished professor of Civil and Construction Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech), received his BS in Civil Engineering from National Chiao-Tung University, Taiwan in 1984, and his MS and PhD in Construction Engineering & Project Management from University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and 1992, respectively. Cheng started his academic career from Taiwan Tech since 1993. Prof. Cheng's research interests include Geographic Information System, Construction Automation, Management Information System, Applications of Artificial Intelligence, and Construction Management Process Reengineering. Cheng also has conducted many funded research projects and received 7 domestic patents and 1 U.S. patent. Moreover, he has published 1 books, more than 160 journal papers and 170 conferences papers in major journals and conferences, and numerous journal papers in processing. Especially, Cheng has received more than 40 honorary awards for his achievements in domestic and international. Prof. Cheng also received the highest award, the Outstanding Engineering Professors Award of Chinese Institute of Engineers in 2016.

Prof. Soonwook Kwon

Lecture Title: Smart Reverse Engineering and Hybrid Reality Technology for Industrial Facility

Professor Soonwook Kwon is a Professor of School of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Landscape Architecture and a Chair Professor of Graduate Program for Future City Convergence Engineering Department of Sungkyunkwan University, Korea.  He is also a board of director of IAARC(International Association of Automation and Robotics in Construction). He received his Ph.D. from University of Texas at Austin, Department of Civil Engineering in Construction Engineering and Project Management Program. After receiving the degree, he worked as a senior researcher at Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT), and conducted research projects in the areas of construction technology and governmental programs encouraging technological advancement of the AEC industry. Before pursuing an academic career, he worked for Samsung Construction Corporation. His research interests are IT and automation technology for construction industry including IoT(NFC, USN, MEMS and RFID etc.), Rapid Prototyping Technology (Laser Scanning, Stereo Camera, AR, VR, HR and Drone etc.), Smart Wearable Devices  (Smart Glass, Smart Band and Smart Jacket etc.), Reverse Engineering Technology (Retrofitting for Industry Facility, 3D Printing, BIM), Equipment Automation Technology, and Gerontechnology. He was a Korean Coordinator of EU Erasmus Mundus Program. He was a visiting professor TU Munich (Technical University Munchen) in Germany funded by EU. He has published 8 books (with co-authoring) and about 100 articles with peer reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings. Also he has about 30 patents and government registered software. He was a member of a Korean governmental committee on drawing a national master plan for construction technology development, specifically in the construction informatics field.

Prof. Shuo-Yan Chou
National Taiwan University of Science & Technology
Lecture Title: Industry 4.0 for Construction

Shuo-Yan Chou is a distinguished professor of industrial management, the director of the Center for Internet of Things Innovation (CITI) at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech), and a member of the Investment Review Committee of the National Development Fund of Taiwan. His research interests include Internet of Things innovation, technology-enabled services, big data analytics, intelligent system modeling and applications, smart logistics, geometric algorithms, as well as social and economic impact of smart city and Industry 4.0 development. Besides fostering a broad spectrum of R&D and projects on IOT, Dr. Chou also runs an IOT University-Industry Consortium and engages in many international cooperation activities. Dr. Chou has served as the dean of international affairs at Taiwan Tech, the national coordinator of the European Union Framework Programme National Contact Point Taiwan Office, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers published by Taylor and Francis as well as on the editorial boards of IJFS, ASCE JEE, JIPE, among others. Dr. Chou was a visiting professor/scholar at MIT Media Lab, Aalto University (Finland), ETH (Switzerland), Hanyang University (Korea), Peking University (China), Nagoya University (Japan), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and University of Washington (USA). He has also served as the general chair for CE2009, 2010 INFORMS Service Science Conference, MCP AP2010, and CE2014 and as the organizer of more than 25 major international events locally or internationally. Dr. Chou received his BBA in industrial management from National Cheng-Kung University, Taiwan in 1983, his MS and PhD in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan in 1987 and 1992, respectively.

Prof. Heng Li
Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Lecture Title: Location Based Site Safety Management

Professor Heng Li is a Chair Professor of Construction Informatics at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Heng started his academic career from Tongji University since 1987. Heng then researched and lectured at the University of Sydney, James Cook University and Monash University before joining Hong Kong Polytechnic University. During this period, Heng have also worked with engineering design and construction firms and provided consultancy services to both private and government organizations in Australia, Hong Kong and China. Heng has conducted many funded research projects related to the innovative application and transfer of construction information technologies, and he has published 2 books, more than 200 journal papers in major journals of his field and numerous conferences papers in proceedings.

Prof. Benny Raphael
IIT Madras
Lecture Title: Machine Learning Applications in Civil Engineering

Dr. Benny Raphael is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras. He did his BTECH and M.S. in Civil Engineering at IIT Madras and obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He worked at Infosys Technologies Ltd. Bangalore, EPFL Switzerland and NUS Singapore, before joining IIT Madras. He co-authored the books Fundamentals of Computer Aided Engineering (John Wiley, 2003) and Engineering Informatics (John Wiley, 2013) which are used as textbooks in many Universities. He won the distinguished R&D award from the Minister for National Development (Government of Singapore) in 2011 for innovations in developing the Zero Energy Building at the BCA Academy, Singapore. He has published about 50 papers in peer reviewed international journals and about 50 papers in the proceedings of international conferences. He has won the best paper award of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering in the years 2008 and 2013. His research interests are in the areas of optimization, computer aided engineering, BIM, building automation and control, and energy efficient buildings.
